If the government’s plan comes to fruition, cheques will become less frequently used in the coming months.This year’s budget continued with last year’s theme of trying to encourage greater use of electronic banking. In a bid to encourage consumers to abandon cheques in favour of electronic payments, changes to stamp duty on ATM cards and cheques were introduced last Tuesday. Each time you write a cheque from now on, you will be charged 50 cent stamp duty - an increase of almost 67 per cent on the previous rate of 30 per cent. The new rate applies to cheques supplied to customers by banks from October 15 onwards.Meanwhile, the annual duty charged on ATM cards and debit cards will halve from €5 to €2.50. Bank customers using a combined ATM and debit card, more commonly known as a laser card, will also see their charge cut in two, falling from €10 to €5.
